How dimensional weight works
Dimensional (dim) weight is length × width × height in inches divided by the carrier's divisor, rounded up to the next pound. The carrier bills whichever is higher: that number or the actual weight, also rounded up. A large, light box therefore costs the same as a heavy small one.
UPS, FedEx and DHL apply dim weight to every package with a divisor of 139. USPS only applies it to packages over one cubic foot and uses 166, which is why USPS is often the cheapest option for bulky but light items. The fastest way to save is a smaller box: shaving an inch off each side of a 12×10×8 box drops its dim weight from 7 lb to 5 lb at 139.
